It’s depends on the case and the style of the defense attorney.  We must respect that a criminal defense attorney has a duty to be a zealous advocate for the accused, and that the accused is presumed innocent.  Still, it is very traumatic for a victim to be confronted by the perpetrator’s attorney in court, especially in the presence of the perpetrator.

One of the most important services a good lawyer provides when representing a domestic violence victim is working closely with her in order to mitigate the trauma, minimize negative emotions, and even get therapeutic value out of the process.  It can, and should, feel empowering.
