Domestic violence victims often tell me they feel re-victimized because they can receive multiple subpoenas for multiple hearing dates, the case often changes hands between several prosecutors, and victims don’t always receive regular communication regarding the status of the case.
Examples as to why complaints I get from domestic violence and sexual assault survivors about the criminal justice system:
- I was not allowed to see the police report before I testified.
- The perpetrator always has a lawyer, but I don’t have one.
- The perpetrator’s attorney is accusing me of lying and malingering.
- The perpetrator is getting away with pretending he is the victim.
